Blinds and awnings for Claremont

Victorian villas on the quiet upper streets, and townhouses and apartments in the denser blocks below. Two different buildings, two different fitting problems.

Local brief

Upper Claremont and Lower Claremont are not the same job

Above Main Road, toward the mountain, Claremont is tree-lined and residential — larger Victorian and Edwardian houses and mid-century homes on quiet streets, with mature street trees filtering the light and west-facing living rooms that catch a hard late sun. Below, closer to the M5 and the Cavendish commercial spine, the grain changes completely: townhouses, semis and low- to mid-rise apartment blocks with balconies and full-height windows and very little shade of their own.

We quote both, but the questions differ. Upstairs it is usually glare control on a west-facing room and something sympathetic on original joinery. Downstairs it is exposure, privacy from neighbours, hard-to-reach openings above a stairwell, and whether the body corporate has a rule about what the outside of the building is allowed to look like.

What we specify here

Specified for the building you actually live in

Sunscreen and blockout for balconies

Full-height balcony glazing is exposed on every side. Sunscreen for the day, blockout where the bedroom faces another block — often a double roller so one bracket does both.

Motorisation for high and awkward openings

Stairwell windows, clerestories and anything above a fixed piece of furniture. A wall switch or remote beats a step-ladder every time.

Timber venetians on upper-street villas

Wide slats suit Victorian and Edwardian reveals, and tilting beats blocking on a room with mature street trees outside it.

Consistent externals for complexes

Where a body corporate specifies what the outside face must look like, we match the backing colour and the visible profile across every unit we fit.

How a Claremont measure usually runs

  • Parking, lift access and loading arrangements confirmed before fitting day for apartments and complexes
  • Body corporate or managing agent requirements checked up front — external appearance rules are common and easier to satisfy before manufacture than after
  • Reveal depths measured carefully on newer developments, where aluminium window frames often leave very little to mount into
  • Original joinery on the upper streets assessed for fixing substrate before anything is quoted
  • Physical fabric samples brought to the flat or the house, not chosen off a screen
  • One written, itemised, per-window quotation, whether it is one balcony or a whole villa

Questions

Worth knowing before the measure

Do you fit blinds in apartments and townhouses, not just houses?

Yes, routinely. Smaller jobs are quoted the same way as large ones — free measure, written per-window price, no minimum.

Our complex has rules about what the windows look like from outside. Can you work with that?

Yes. Tell us the rule, or give us the managing agent’s contact, and we will match the specified backing colour and visible profile. It is far cheaper to get that right before manufacture.

The window frames are aluminium with almost no reveal. What then?

Usually a face-fixed headrail above the frame, or a slim bracket fixed to the frame itself where the section allows it. The consultant checks the profile on site — it is exactly the kind of thing that cannot be judged from a photo.

Our living room bakes from about four in the afternoon. What fixes that?

A sunscreen roller or a venetian on the west glass, and if the room is used late, a timed motor so it shades itself before the heat builds rather than after you have already felt it.

A balcony or a whole villa — same process

Free in-home measure, physical samples, and a written itemised quote per window. No minimum order and no obligation.
