Blinds and awnings for Constantia
From gabled Cape Dutch homesteads with deep-set windows to contemporary mansions built around double-volume glass — one valley, two completely different shading briefs.
A valley that still faces its vineyards
Constantia is Cape Town’s oldest wine valley and it still reads like one. Groot Constantia, Klein Constantia, Buitenverwachting and Steenberg sit inside the suburb, and the housing between them ranges from original whitewashed Cape Dutch homesteads to grand contemporary builds — with working vineyards, equestrian smallholdings and oak avenues in between.
That range is the whole point for shading. Valley-floor properties tend to open toward the vines or the mountain, which means long, unobstructed afternoon sun across large expanses of glass. Older Cape Dutch homes, with their small deep-set openings and thick walls, have almost the opposite problem: not enough light, and joinery you do not want to touch carelessly. We quote both in the same visit, room by room.

Glare off open vine rows is a different job to canopy glare
Sunscreen on the vineyard side
Where the view is the reason the glass is there, a sunscreen mesh knocks back glare and UV without taking the vines away. Openness factor chosen against how far the view sits from the window.
Blockout in the bedrooms
Long, open western exposure means bright evenings and early mornings. Blockout roller or a blockout cellular where the room also runs cold.
Timber venetians on older joinery
Deep-set Cape Dutch and cottage-pane windows take a slim venetian headrail without any fixing into the sash. Wide slats suit the scale of the reveal.
Awnings and zip screens on the terrace
An open aspect means wind as well as sun. Full-cassette awnings with wind sensors, and zip screens on the exposed side where a canopy alone is not enough.
How a Constantia measure usually runs
- Long driveways and gated entrances noted up front, so the fitting team is not held at a gate with a vehicle full of made-to-measure product
- Every elevation walked, because a Constantia house frequently has one side facing a mountain and another facing open vineyard with no shade at all
- Heritage and estate-adjacent properties: fixings assessed against the actual frame material before anything is specified
- Equestrian and smallholding buildings quoted alongside the house where you want the same specification carried through
- Physical fabric samples held against your own light rather than chosen from a screen
- One written, itemised, per-window quotation covering the whole property
The rest of the southern suburbs we cover
Constantia is the biggest brief in the valley, but the same specifying logic carries straight into the suburbs around it.
Worth knowing before the measure
Do you cover the whole valley, including Constantia Nek and Upper Constantia?
Yes — the whole suburb, and the roads climbing toward Constantia Nek. Bishopscourt is our base, so Constantia is a short run for the consultant and the fitting team.
Our house is Cape Dutch with small deep windows. Is there enough room for a blind?
Almost always. A slim venetian headrail or a compact roller fits inside most deep reveals, and where it genuinely does not, a face-fixed option above the architrave keeps every fixing out of the original joinery. The consultant measures the reveal depth before recommending either.
We have a huge west-facing glass wall. What actually works?
Usually a sunscreen roller sized in aligned sections, motorised, so there is no chain hanging down the glass — often on a timer so the glass is already shaded before the afternoon heat arrives. If the ceiling detail allows it, a concealed recessed system removes the headrail from the view entirely.
Can you shade a patio without putting posts on the paving?
That is exactly what a folding-arm awning does — the canopy is carried on sprung arms off the wall, so nothing stands on the terrace. On an exposed Constantia position we would specify a full cassette and a wind sensor with it.
